Toyota GR86 Hakone Edition Returns

Toyota GR86 Hakone Edition Returns

The 2025 Toyota GR86 is a fantastic and affordable sports car, delivering a blend of modest yet fitting power with an exceptional chassis and sharp, engaging handling. This remains true across all versions of the GR86, including the new 2025 Toyota GR86 Hakone Edition. This special edition doesn't alter the car's fundamental strengths but instead enhances its aesthetic appeal and makes a few subtle tweaks to its ride and handling.

The Return of the Hakone Edition

The Hakone Edition returns to the GR86 lineup with a nod to its predecessor from the last generation. The formula remains similar: the 2025 Hakone, based on the Premium trim GR86, features Ridge Green exterior paint, 18-inch bronze-painted wheels, a ducktail spoiler, black accents, and distinctive "Hakone" badging. These elements combine to create a striking visual package that stands out from the standard GR86 models.

Under the Hood

Mechanically, the 2025 Hakone Edition remains largely unchanged from the base GR86. It retains the Subaru-derived 228-hp, 184 lb-ft 2.0-liter H-4 engine, available with either a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission, and maintains its rear-drive layout. Toyota has made unspecified tweaks to the Sachs dampers to improve handling and has retuned the electronic power steering slightly. These adjustments likely incorporate the performance package hardware introduced in the 2024 model year, though Toyota has not confirmed this directly. Additionally, the control software has been remapped for better acceleration and improved upshift/downshift blipping.

Availability and Pricing

The 2025 Toyota GR86 Hakone Edition, with only 860 units available for the U.S. market, will start arriving at dealerships this fall. Pricing details and more specifics about the hardware and software upgrades will be announced closer to the on-sale date. Stay tuned for updates as the Hakone Edition prepares to make its debut, offering enthusiasts a unique blend of performance and style.
