Toyota's Leap: Camry Goes All Hybrid in 2025
In a landscape dominated by SUVs, mid-size sedans like the Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord persist as practical family-friendly options. While the Sonata received a recent refresh and Honda introduced a new generation of the Accord, it's now the Toyota Camry's turn to shine. Setting itself apart, the Camry is making a bold move by embracing a hybrid-only approach, surpassing its competitors.
The Camry's Powertrain:
Drawing inspiration from Toyota's other hybrid models like the Crown Signia, the 2025 Camry boasts a familiar powertrain. The hybrid system pairs a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine with two or three electric motors. The front motors contribute to front-wheel power, and for the first time in hybrid Camrys, an optional all-wheel-drive system includes a third motor for enhanced traction. The front-wheel-drive hybrid generates 225 horsepower, while the all-wheel-drive version increases it to an impressive 232 hp. Both setups come with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Revamped Design Inside and Out:
Debates about whether the Camry's updated appearance qualifies as a mid-cycle refresh have surfaced, but the familiarity and functionality of the design are notable. The front sports new headlights inspired by the Prius and the Crown, maintaining a distinctive appearance with a beaky front bumper. The side profile retains the traditional Camry look, and the fresh taillights at the rear offer a modern touch.
Inside the cabin, the influence of the Crown is evident, with shared elements such as the steering wheel, medium-high center console, and console trim. The Camry includes a wireless phone charger, five USB ports, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an 8.0-inch partially digital gauge cluster as standard features on the LE and SE trims. The XLE and XSE models, however, boast larger 12.3-inch screens for both.
Variety in Trim Levels and Pricing:
The Camry offers four trims, neatly divided into two categories. The LE and XLE emphasize comfort, with the XLE adding features like front-side acoustic glass, larger wheels, fancier headlights, leather seating, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, and ambient lighting. On the sportier side, the SE and XSE come with unique suspension tuning, black trim, and distinct wheel designs. The XSE stands out with a large black trim piece, a body-colored rear diffuser, and dual exhaust tips.
Anticipated Arrival and Pricing:
The 2025 Toyota Camry is set to debut in 2024, with pricing details yet to be disclosed. While current Camry hybrid prices range from just below $30,000 to a bit over $35,000, the inclusion of advanced features in the new model may lead to a slight increase in prices, but overall affordability is expected to be maintained.
